Tao emphasizes, “Heat stress is a silent economic drain for dairy producers, especially in the Southeast.” But UGA isn’t just sitting back—they’re pioneering solutions to keep cows cool and productive.
One bold approach? Implementing comprehensive cooling systems. Tao explains, “Shade is just the beginning. We’re combining evaporative cooling—fans, misters, and soakers—in key areas like milking parlors, holding pens, and lactating cow barns.” But cooling isn’t the only strategy. Here’s a thought-provoking twist: certain food additives can help cows regulate body temperature and boost immunity, while innovative calf management techniques ensure the next generation of dairy cows thrives even in summer heat.
